Aperitif: Table Hopping Science

The Physikanten approach the audience at the bistro tables or at their seats for the meal. They challenge the audience with mini-experiments. These are cunningly presented as magic tricks; but of course everything is explained with science. Guests will be sure to be left saying “Damn, I could have worked that out really!”

Which egg rolls faster down a ramp, a raw or hard boiled one? Or do both travel at the same speed? Which egg rolls faster down a ramp, a raw or hard boiled one? Or do both travel at the same speed?
When you hold a see-through glass tube in front of a particular sign, only one word, “Zaubert”, is turned upside down. Why? When you hold a see-through glass tube in front of a particular sign, only one word, “Zaubert”, is turned upside down. Why?

If desired we can bring our fog tornado (1m x 1m x 2.4m). The fog tornado is in constant motion and can be controlled by the guests.

At the table: DIY-Experiments

On the tables are small silver boxes, left for the guests to explore and experiment with among themselves. Brief instructions are given to help them.

Can you make the world’s simplest motor? It’s a simple as putting a screw on a small, strong, cylindrical magnet and letting the top of the screw (the sharp end) attach itself magnetically to the bottom of a battery. Now use a piece of wire to connect the upper pole of the battery with the side of the magnet and ‘Hey Presto’: the motor spins! Can you make the world’s simplest motor? Guests are challenged to pierce a potato with a plastic drinking straw. But how? The trick is to give the straw stability through high momentum; in other words move it quickly. The Meal: The Show

Between courses the Physikanten present the highlight of the evening: The Interactive Physics Show! Spectacular experiments are presented by Professor Otto Liebermann and his assistant through witty and entertaining dialogue. Audience members are invited to help out on stage, and a mass competition is held among all the guests sitting at their tables.
(3 sets of 20 to 25 minutes, descriptions are available on bottom of page).

The Quiz

On the table guests can find voting cards, which they can use to answer questions in a quiz. The result is a thrilling but friendly competition! At the end of the evening the table with the most correct answers receives a prize.

Auf den Tischen werden die Experimente in silbernen Schachteln bereit gestellt.
Für jede richtige Antwort beim Quiz dürfen die Gäste eine Glitzerkugel in die Glasvase stecken.

The Reward: Ice cream made with liquid nitrogen

Cream, sugar and strawberries are mixed together in a big bowl (guests can add other ingredients if they wish). Liquid nitrogen is poured over the mixture and it is again stirred. After a few moments delicious ice cream is formed before the eyes of the audience, and is distributed to the members of the winning team.
